Download PDF files for Linked Chain Stitch instructions: Link Two PDF | Link Three PDF
I've had a few questions regarding my article in Bead & Button, most saying that they were having trouble working the second link. Because of this, I've decided that for this month's "freebie" I'm providing the pages from my book that relate to interlinking the second and third links. Hopefully, this will help clarify the article.
1. Using the second color, pick up 12 beads, leaving a 3-4 inch tail to weave in later. Pass the needle through the first loop of the previous link, from back to front, and then through all 12 beads again to form a loop.
2. After pulling the loop tight, tie a square knot. Then pass the needle back through the first 6 beads in the loop. Turn the loop so that the thread is coming out of a spine and is positioned as below.
3. As easy way to make sure that you are going through the correct beads is to hold the loop with the knot at the bottom, and then pass the needle through the 6 beads that fall to the back of the previous link. Again, once you have passed the thread through the correct beads, position it as below.
4. Pick up 8 beads, pass the needle through the second loop of the previous link, again going from back to front. Then pass the needle through the spine of the first loop and through the first 6 beads of the second loop. The spine between the first and second loops should be in front of the spine of the previous link.
5. Pick up 8 beads, pass the needle through the third loop of the previous link, again going from back to front. Then pass the needle through the spine of the second loop and through the first 6 beads of the third loop. The spine between the second and third loops should be behind the spine of the previous link.
6. Pick up 8 beads, pass the needle through the fourth loop of the previous link, again going from back to front. Then pass the needle through the spine of the third loop. The spine between the third and fourth loops should be in front of the spine of the previous link.
Continue adding loops, alternating the spines from front to back, until you reach the last loop in the first link. Remember, always pass the needle through the previous links going from back to front. Finish off the threads as you did for the first link. You should now have two links, interlocked as shown below.
